Bethany UMC

How bethany UMC Started

With the spread of Methodism into Southside, and in a course of only forty-five years from the time Methodism was introduced into Norfolk and Portsmouth, we find in 1817 Mallory Todd deeding land to be used as a Methodist Episcopal Church. This Church would be known as Bidgoode, carrying the name of two of its five original trustees. Not much is known about our earlier history. However, we do know that in 1853 a pulpit bible was presented to the Church with the notation “upon the rebuilding of Bidgoode” noted in it. Whether this indicates that the structure from ca. 1817 had been destroyed, or a renovation of the original building had taken place is unknown.

In 1890, a new sanctuary was constructed and the name changed to Bethany. The lumber used in construction was donated by Mr. Richard Turner from mills he operated in the area. Paneled in three inch tongue and groove heart pine, the sanctuary has the original finish that was applied in 1890. The picture which hangs in the vestibule of our Church is that of Mr. Turner. Also, found in the sanctuary is a memorial window to both him and Mrs. Turner.

Both worship and Sunday school gatherings took place in this sanctuary until 1916 when the original eight classrooms were built. Prior to the construction of classrooms, while Sunday school was being conducted for the adults, the children were grouped according to age levels and classes for them were conducted in the four corners of the sanctuary.

Six of the stained glass windows in the sanctuary are original; the other eight were installed in 1947. Our physical facility was enlarged with additional classroom space in the late 1950’s. In 1975 we replaced our fellowship hall with a much needed, larger addition.

Many contributions, both spiritual and physical, have been made through the untiring efforts of those who have worshipped here through the years. We are a vibrant, energetic, and evangelistic Methodist congregation. We look forward to serving God for many years to come!
